1/21/24 - The Ritual Of Coffee

I think I started drinking coffee at my first job. The job I started at 16 (my family's old restaurant) but I didn't start routinely drinking it until I was about 18. Those sugary caramel frappuccinos and the sickly sweet iced macchiatos. For a long time I've looked into a bunch of different ways to drink coffee. Cafecito Cubano, Turkish coffee, café au lait or even Arab coffee! I find myself following a lot of coffee connoisseurs on social media. As a matter of fact I've even made friends with one! He enjoys the pairing of both cigars and coffee and in fact has built his brand on partnering both. The coffee making Youtube shorts OH MY GOODNESS those are addicting to watch! (Much like the garlic confit recipe shorts.) Similar to East Asian tea ceremonies - there's most certainly coffee rituals. The grinding of the odorous coffee beans, placing the grounds in a filter, even right down to the way the coffee is poured. My personal favorite way is to firstly light an ambient incense. Then I scoop my coffee and place it in my pour-over drip coffee mechanism. Watching the hazel colored liquid drip into the heat-resistant coffee server. Normally I prefer a woodsy or musk scented incense which is a better fit for coffee. Floral incense would go much better with freshly brewed tea. No matter what I appreciate the delicacy that both entail. Freshly brewed coffee and tea can both entail a meaningful ceremony!
